Sparring Gloves

The obvious difference between the MMA glove and the boxing glove is the size. Professional boxers usually wear a glove between 14 and 16 ounces when training, and 10 ounces when in the ring. MMA fighters usually train with 7 to 8 ounce gloves, and wear 4 ounce gloves in the ring. A professional mixed martial arts glove will have a half inch of padding on the outside, and a training glove will have about an inch of padding. Why the vast difference in weight?

To fully understand the difference in size, we must understand the difference in the two sports.

The purpose of the boxing glove and the MMA glove varies greatly. Boxers generally stand on their feet and trade a high volume of punches.
